How a company score is calculated

A time-weighted Bayesian average, not a simple mean.

A score is not the average of the star ratings. Two adjustments are applied.

Recent experience counts for more

Every review loses half its weight after a year. A company that was excellent three years ago and mediocre now scores lower than its raw average suggests, which is the point — you are deciding whether to use them today.

Small samples are pulled toward the middle

A profile with three five-star reviews does not outrank one with four thousand. Until there is enough evidence, a score sits close to the platform average of 3.5 out of 5. This is what stops a handful of reviews producing a perfect score.

Scores are recalculated nightly and whenever a review is published, edited or removed.
